DUDLEY – The Shepherd Hill girls volleyball team ended their regular season in style with a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Sutton on Wednesday (October 31), but the real prize awaits them this week as district play gets under way.

As usual it was a total team effort for the 15-3 Rams in their season finale with seniors Danielle Watkins, Jen Green, and Johanna L’Heureux leading the way in the 20-25, 25-19, 30-28, 25-18 victory over the pesky 17-3 Suzies.

“We have won some tough matches; we have come from behind on three separate occasions down two sets to zero to win. We have been very competitive and have done some good things this year,” said Coach Tom Caffelle.

“I think it would be a big plus for the program if we won a district game,” said Caffelle, who has been the head coach in all six years of the team’s existence. “We have grown quite a bit already and I think we are getting better every year, but it would be a big step up for us I believe.”

Caffelle, who had been a volleyball enthusiast for many years, “jumped” when the opportunity came six years ago to coach the team  and has been pleased with the way the program has progressed.

This season the Rams have been led by an outstanding senior group which includes Sonya Ugrinow, Julie Preissler, Jess Schutrick, and Sarah Ziemski along with Green, Watkins, and L’Heureux.

“There are a few girls that want to continue on (after high school). Once again it’s another big step for them because the level of play does increase at the college level, but I think as time goes on we will see more and more players looking to continue to play.  If not that, I think we are going to see a lot of life-long volley ball players, kids that enjoy the game and will play as adults,” said Caffelle.

Stay tuned for more on the Shepherd Hill girl’s volleyball as the playoffs unfold.

Dudley Town Meeting, Monday

Residents to vote on budget and combined Treasurer-Collector position

DUDLEY – Voters at the Fall Town Meeting next Monday night will be asked to vote on a series of budget items that include a narrow band radio system for the fire department and vocational school tuition and transportation expenses. The items are contained in a supplemental budget proposal which will use free cash to pay for unfunded state mandates as well as a number of public safety items.

The town has an estimated $225,904 in free cash which it can use to pay the expenses, some of them unforeseen when the fiscal year 2013 budget was approved in May, as well as restore some line items removed at that time. Free cash is money unspent from the last fiscal year, which ended June 30.

The state mandates include an update to the fire department’s radio system to conform to new narrow band regulations required by the FCC. The system will cost $67,647 and will allow the town to communicate with other area towns.

Another high cost line item is $33,344, which will cover tuition and transportation for a Dudley student to attend Norfolk County Agricultural High School in Walpole.

The supplementary budget also calls for the restoration of items that were cut from the fiscal 2013 budget. One is $30,000 to continue EMS coverage by the Fire Department between 6:00 p.m. and midnight, now set to expire on November 1. If passed, the $30,000 will allow coverage to continue until the end of the fiscal year.

Another is the restoration of $10,324 to keep the streetlights on. One hundred and fifty streetlights were slated to be turned off in November to save on the cost of electricity. The supplementary budget also includes $15,000 for Police Department overtime and lifeguard expenses.

A separate budget item is the purchase of a new pickup truck for the Sewer Department. Its cost of $43,148 will come from Sewer Department retained earnings.

Two articles on the warrant concern a proposal to combine the positions of Town Treasurer and Tax Collector into one Treasurer-Collector. This kind of action can be accomplished in two ways, by a town meeting vote followed by a ballot, or by a special act of the legislature.

The Board of Selectmen proposed an article (#18) establishing the combined position according to Chapter 41 of the Massachusetts General Laws, requiring the two votes at town meeting and ballot. The current Town Treasurer, Richard Carmignani Jr., who is also serving as Tax Collector, has submitted a separate warrant article (#20) that would petition the General Court to take the special action.

Both articles make the combined position an elected one, as they are now. Selectmen discussed the wisdom of combining the roles of Tax Collector and Treasurer in light of the fact there would be no checks and balances in the new position. They also considered the wisdom of having the new position be appointed or elected. “There’s the matter of accountability,” said Town Administrator Peter Jankowski.

With an elected position, there is no accountability to the Board of Selectmen. An appointed position would have that oversight.” The people will have to decide whether or not to combine the positions and have it be elected or appointed, he said.

The meeting will be October 29 at 7:00 p.m. at the Shepherd Hill Regional High School auditorium.

Three escape fiery crash in Dudley

Friday October 19, 2012
Location:  Route 31 near Hickory Drive, Dudley

Text and photos by Patriot staff. More photos follow

Particulars:   Three male juveniles riding in a late model Oldsmobile Alero narrowly escaped disaster Friday, when the car they were riding in rolled over, crashed through a utility pole, and burst into flame.

Shortly before 3:30 PM on Friday, Dudley police, ambulance, and fire units were dispatched to a reported car accident on Route 31, also known as Dresser Hill Road, near the intersection of Hickory Drive in Dudley.  When police arrived, they found a utility pole that had been severed and was suspended by live electrical, cable, and telephone wires over Rt. 31.  They also found a large debris field, car parts that had been strewn about the roadway as a result of the accident, and a demolished sedan sitting in the middle of the roadway, smoking heavily.  All of the occupants had escaped from the vehicle; one needed to be assisted out of the wrecked car by a passer-by.

As the Dudley Fire Department Ambulance arrived on scene and began to treat the three lucky occupants of the car, the sedan suddenly caught fire and commenced to burn furiously.  Dudley firefighters arrived moments later and quickly doused the charred auto.

Two of the three male occupants involved in the crash received injuries, one apparently minor and the other serious.  Both were transported by Dudley Ambulance to UMASS Hospital – University Campus in Worcester for definitive care of their injuries.  Their conditions were not immediately known.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the Dudley Police Department, but it appears that speed was a factor in the accident.  Due to the severed utility pole at the scene, the heavily traveled Dresser Hill Road needed to be shut down between Dresser Hill Rd. #2 and Dudley-Southbridge Road for several hours as National Grid repaired the damage caused by the accident.  Traffic was re-routed during that time.

On Friday, October 19th at approximately 3:15 pm, Dudley Police as well as Dudley Fire and Emergency Services personnel were dispatched to a single car motor vehicle accident on Dresser Hill Road (Route 31) at the intersection with Hickory Drive.  Upon arrival, officers discovered a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero in the southbound lane.  The vehicle appeared to have been traveling in a northerly direction and left the roadway at a curve.  It struck a utility pole, other objects along the roadside, and rolled over before coming to rest.  The vehicle caught fire shortly after the accident.  There was driver and two passengers in this vehicle.  All are juveniles.  A passerby assisted at least one of the passengers out of the vehicle.  The male operator suffered what appeared to be minor injuries.  The two passengers were treated by the responding officers and Dudley Emergency Services personnel.  They were later transported to UMass Hospital in Worcester.  Both passengers are teenage males.  One was in serious condition while the other complained of pain.  The cause of the accident is under investigation at this point by Dudley Officers Chandler Boyd, Anthony Didonato, and Ryan Daniels.  Initially, speed appears to be a factor in this crash.  Due to the damage to the pole, traffic detours will be in place for several hours and power outages may be in effect.
