Nichols series: Indian Culture and Economy

Series begins Wednesday, Oct. 3

India comes to Nichols College during the next two weeks, as the school’s
Fischer Institute presents a five-event series covering music, dance, and
cinema, and economic issues in the country’s rapidly emerging economy. All
of the programs are free and open to the public.

The series follows an international music and food festival held yesterday
(in case you wanted to include next Sunday) that featured hour-long
performances of Incan pan pipes, Reggae, Cuban Salsa, and African drumming.

The Indian programs begin on Wednesday, October 3rd at 7:00 p.m. with a
showing of the film “Monsoon Wedding.”

On Thursday, October 11th, also at 7:00 pm, Northeastern University’s Ravi
Ramamurti will talk about India’s growing middle class as well as strategies
in dealing with India and China in his presentation From “Slumdog to
Samruddhi.” Ramamurti is a Distinguished Professor of International Business
and Strategy and the Director of Northeastern’s Center for Emerging Markets.

Both events will take place in Davis 205 on the Nichols campus.

Dance takes center stage in Nichols Daniels Auditorium on Friday, October
12th at 2:00 p.m. with visiting artist Parul Shah and her dancers. The
troupe will focus on the dances in northern India. Shah, who will spend a
five-day residency at Nichols meeting students and faculty and visiting
classes, also will offer a workshop on Saturday, October 13th at 2:00 p.m.
in Daniels Auditorium on techniques used in traditional Indian dance.

The series culminates on Sunday, October 14th at 2:00 p.m. with a concert of
Indian-influenced musical works by the composer Shirish Korde, accompanied
by soprano Deepti  Navaratna and cellist Jan Muller-Szerwas. The concert will
take place at the First Congregational Church of Dudley, 135 Center Road,
next to the Nichols campus. A reception with the follow the performance.
