Selectmen appoint Davis; hear reasons for budget requests

DUDLEY - The March 18 Board of Selectmen’s meeting opened with Fire Chief Dean Kochanowski, requesting that Mr. Dave Karalus, who was serving on the building committee and fire chief advisory committee, be replaced by Mr. Burt Davis.  Karalus submitted a letter of resignation last month.  Chairman Jonathan Ruda suggested that the committee approve the appointment of Davis and send a letter of thanks to Karalus for his service.

The board switched up the order of the agenda so that the “rather lengthy public hearing” would not hold up a representative from Nichols College.   Multiple requests by the school, for alcohol permits, were taken care of in one motion.  Nichols college received seven separate, single-day licenses to serve “wine and malt” for functions they will be hosting.

In his announcement, Joseph stated “I have been honored and privileged to serve the Town with a candid and independent voice for the past nine years.  We currently have an excellent Board of Selectmen that works hard, and well, together. Each of us brings a separate and complementary  set of skills to the table.  As a former college administrator and Dean, I bring 31 years of contract negotiation, legal issues knowledge, analytical skills, and management experience to the Board”.

DUDLEY –The Shepherd Hill Rams baseball team probably wants to forget their dreadful finish of a year ago when they dropped six of their last eight games, resulting in a disappointing 9-11 season.

The hardest part of that pill to swallow was that the Rams had a talented bunch, many of whom will be back on the diamond this season.

In fact, when the Rams open their 2013 season, one of the toughest decisions the team may have to deal with is who to hand the ball to on the mound.

DUDLEY – The Shepherd Hill Lady Rams are coming off a strong playoff season that ended with a heartbreaking 2-0 loss to Holy Name.

Still, with a 14-9 record Coach Paul Enman and the Rams had a lot to be happy about.

Unfortunately they lost their ace hurler Molly Covill to graduation. Covill was an outstanding leader, whose 1.21 earned run average was one of the best in the Southern Worcester County League.

Indians open March 29 at Tantasqua

WEBSTER – The Bartlett Indians and second year head coach Jonathan Way have only one way to go this season and that’s up.

Following a dismal 4-14 campaign, the Indians will be looking to turn things around this season and their quest for respectability starts in Fiskdale against Tantasqua Regional on Friday, March 29, at 3:30.

A new beginning for Lady Pirates

Nicole Mangaudis

OXFORD - When Nicole “The Franchise” Mangaudis walked off the mound following last season’s playoff loss to Grafton, it was the end of an era for the Lady Pirates.

Mangaudis had pitched in every inning of every game for four years under Coach Jamie Hetherman and in most cases you would think that she would be impossible to replace, and in many ways, she will be.

Enter sophomore Evelyn Marquis, who will not only take over the reigns on the mound but brings a team-leading .452 batting average to the ballpark as well.

Kennedy Library to receive Make a Difference awards.  “The Kennedy Library annually recognizes up to 100 middle school students from across Massachusetts with the John F. Kennedy Make a Difference Award for the impact they have made in their communities through service projects,” according to the library’s website.  The Library selects recipients based on nominations from teachers, principals and local community leaders.  Both Blackadar and Mackay  have each been invited to a ceremony at the Library on April 9th, along with a number of other middle-schoolers from around the Commonwealth who have made efforts to change the world and make it better for people.

Pirates reloading after State title run

Nick Cardoni will be looking to build on his solid season of a year ago

OXFORD – The Oxford Pirates and head coach Justin Richards had quite a run a year ago before losing 3-0 to Mt. Everett in the state semi-finals held in Western Mass.

Despite losing several key players, the Pirates should be in the mix again this year.

No matter who you talk to, everyone seems to agree that the town of Oxford knows baseball and year after year at every level they are competing for some sort of a title, and this year will be no different.

There is no question that the Pirates lost some great baseball players, led by one of the best pitchers in Central Mass in lefty Nick Lemay, who is now playing for Becker College.

by David O'Connor

Ten years ago on March 3rd, 2003 The Golden Greek restaurant opened its doors to the public when they leased the old “Big Apple” Fruit Stand on 156 Lake Street. Owner Nick Thanas looking to expand his portfolio in Massachusetts asked long time employee Wayne Nadeau to take the lead as the General Manager. Shortly after opening shop, Nick passed away and after some negotiations, Wayne purchased the restaurant preserving the Golden Greek name.

There are several menu items available for under $10, and they also have an assortment of beer and wine available as well.

After you’ve made your purchase, your receipt will have a question on it. Winners will enjoy a free pizza a week for a year and free “broasted” chicken for a year. In addition to these grand prize drawings, there will also be free raffle prizes for T-Shirts, hats, and other Greek-swag.
