Clark Loring Poland, 88

Clark Loring Poland, 88, died on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at The Overlook in Charlton, MA. He was born in Malden, MA, and grew up in Oradell, NJ. where he met his wife of 57 years, Harriet Desmond, who died at The Pines in Davidson, NC, in 2006. His three children, Lynn, Nancy, and George, and five grandchildren survive him.

A veteran of WWII, Clark was a member of an Army mortar platoon in Company D, 387th Infantry Regiment. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and participated in both the European and Japanese theaters of war. Clark was awarded the Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medals.

He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in1948 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He later earned a Masters in Industrial Engineering from Columbia University.

He had a successful career in manufacturing including many years at General Foods Corp. and The American Can Co. In retirement he ran his own company as a distributor of Danish paper making machinery.

A world traveler for both work and pleasure, he spent much time in the Philippines, which was always dear to his heart. In retirement in NC he belonged to the River Hills Emergency Services Squad and was a member of the "100 Run Club" as a first responder.

He was also a devoted volunteer for Our Towns Habitat for Humanity in Cornelius, NC.

There are no calling hours. Services will be Private. The Robert J.Miller –Charlton Funeral Home, 175 Old Worcester Rd. is assisting the family with arrangements.
