You’d think that by now, after all the school shootings, the Oklahoma City bombing, the terrorists attacks of September 11th, the DC area sniper, malls and movie theater shootings, I’d be used to the violence and utter lack of respect some people have for human life.
You’d think by now, after watching the hours or even days of endless news coverage, I’d be numb to the overwhelming despair and pain that I feel watching and listening to the reporters interview the families and loved ones who have lost a part of themselves and are now facing a life that will never be the same.
You’d think by now, I’d understand and accept how a mother or father could kill their children, a serial killer could torture and cannibalize his victims, or a pedophile could rob precious children of their innocence.
Where is the country that I knew as a child? Where are the people that cherished patriotism, the American flag and believed with all our hearts what it stood for, and even more importantly, respected the price that was paid for our freedom?
Where are the people who worshipped God and believed in the responsibility each generation had to leave this planet in better condition than when we inherited it from our parents?
When did our priorities get so screwed up that we fight for the rights of the criminals while all too often, leave the victims on their own to resolve ongoing emotional and financial problems?
When did we make the corporate bottom line the single most important business yard stick to measure the success or value of a program or product? When did the greed of a few outweigh all the rights of the hard-working middle class?
When did we get so arrogant that we could condone the destruction of natural resources, and extinction or genocide of a group of people in the name of progress or religion?
How did we get so far left of human rights and dignity that we could ignore bullying, embrace ridicule and laugh with sarcasm?
How did we become so accepting of violence as a way of life and the answer to all the world’s problems?
How do we go back to a time that the need for law enforcement was secondary as the respect for ourselves and each other was so much a part of our everyday life that it never occurred to someone or some group to make a bomb and explode it in such as way as to kill innocent people.
Why do we need such violent and vulgar video games, movies and television shows?
Why do we need to spice up our conversations with such demeaning language and colorful metaphors?
Why can’t we follow the word of the Lord and live our lives like we would want to be treated. Why?
