Peter's Picks

Congrats to the Bartlett (1-1) and Shepherd Hill (2-0) football teams on their victories this past weekend. The hometown Indians crushed host Quaboag in a rare 5 p.m. kickoff Friday at Quaboag by a convincing 45-6 score. I had to do a doubletake when I saw the score and have to admit that I did not expect 45 points from these young Injuns. Kudos to Bartlett’s OC Rob Sargent for unleashing all the weapons against Quaboag. Four Indians scored touchdown’s. Nothing wrong with giving the kids the confidence they needed. The Indian defense nailed it also and DC Mike Tolman has to be a happy guy after getting slapped in the opener by Mr. Lachapelle of Whitinsville. The Indians were led by Alex Givens-Perry, James Patterson, Billy Phillips, Akeem Belnavis, and quarterback Rick Spooner.Belnavis scored two touchdowns while Perry, Patterson, and Philips, each had one. Spooner threw a five yard pass to Belnavis. The Indians are scheduled to host winless Nipmuc on Friday at 5 p.m. because of the triple E threat. Bartlett can beat Nipmuc because of their new found enthusiasm and offensive weapons. Nipmuc is not Quaboag and the Indians need another good week of practice as they go for win number two of this young season.

How about Shepherd Hill’s big win over St. Peter’s in Worcester on Saturday afternoon? Despite the brotherhood of officials, Shepherd Hill won and deserved this road victory. The refs did their very best to give the game to the home team, but the Rams withstood the whistle blowers and came up big in the fourth quarter. The biggest play of the game came on St. Peter’s fourth quarter two point conversion attempt with the score 12-6 and Shepherd Hill trailing. Quarterback turned cornerback Drew Ravenelle deflected the conversion pass with his left hand on a great timing play and then turned around and led his team to the tying touchdown on a 36 yard TD run and then scored the winning points on a rushing attempt as Shepherd Hill got out of Worcester with a well deserved 14-12 victory.Matt Vertucci also scored for undefeated Shepherd Hill.

The Rams entertain undefeated Grafton (2-0) this Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Dudley. Look for Shepherd Hill to go 3-0.Grafton, like Shepherd Hill runs the double wing offense and this game could be over in 90 minutes.

THE OXFORD INSURANCE AGENCY PLAYER OF THE WEEK WAS SHEPHERD HILL QUARTERBACK DREW RAVENELLE FOR HIS FOURTH QUARTER HEROICS AGAINST ST. PETER’S. RAVENELLE SCORED 8 POINTS LATE IN THE GAME AND DEFLECTED A PASS PLAYING DEFENSE FOR THE RAMS WHO BEAT ST. PETER’S FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN FOOTBALL.

THE OXFORD INSURANCE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK WENT TO SHEPHERD HILL LINEBACKER CHRIS DUTTING WHO HAD A TRMENDOUS GAME OUT OF THE 4-3 DEFENSE THAT HELD ST.PETER’S TO 12 POINTS.

BECAUSE OF THE EEE THREAT FOOTBALL GAMES HAVE CHANGED FOR THIS WEEKEND.

THE OXFORD INSURANCE GAME OF THE WEEK

NIPMUC AT BARTLETT FRIDAY 5 P.M. AT MEMORIAL FIELD,WEBSTER. PLEASE JOIN MATT MORWAY AND PETE GEANIS FOR ALL THE ACTION BEGINNING AT 4:45 WITH THE PRE GAME SHOW ON AM 940 WGFP/

BARTLETT over NIPMUC

As they say, get them while you can. Bartlett has some bumps in the road ahead of them and Nipmuc is a winable game. After Nipmuc it’s Tantasqua, Uxbridge, Shepherd Hill, Millbury, and Leicester. That’s a brutal 5 game stretch. The Indians have to continue their forward progress after an excellent week at Quaboag. I like the home team in Webster this week.

SHEPHERD HILL over GRAFTON

AT SHEPHERD HILL SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

The Rams have two catch games in a row - Grafton and then Gardner - before they get to shake hands with Auburn again. I’d be very disappointed if Shepherd Hill gets beat by Grafton or Gardner. Grafton returns 17 starters from last year and they run the same offense as Shepherd Hill.

OXFORD over DAVID PROUTY

AT OXFORD SATURDAY AFTERNOON

The Pirates are getting close and this could be their week.Last week’s double overtime loss to South was a heartbreaker. South is a well coached team this year and, by the way, South is undefeated. Prouty lost to Northbridge last week 49-0. What goes around comes around for that group in Spencer. They were putting up big numbers a few years back.

BAY PATH over SOUTH

AT COMMERCE FIELD,WORCESTER 3 P.M.

The Minutemen lost a tough one last week to West Boylston. WB has had Bay Path’s number for the last two years.South is 2-0 and that group in Worcester will be sky high for this game on Saturday. Give a city kid momentum and watch out. Bay Path needs their best effort this week.South has speed and can get to the gear that can eventually burn you. I like BP and they should contain the speed and win.

OTHER SOUTH COUNTY GAMES:

AUBURN over ST.PETER’S...

SOUTHBRIDGE over NORTH...

NORTHBRIDGE over TANTASQUA

LAST WEEK’S PREDICTIONS: 4-3 THIS SEASON 8-3
